WEST END, modern parish carved out of South Stoneham
Since this place is not the west end of any parish, nor west from any nearby place of any significance, its name may be from Old English 'waestenne'='waste, wilderness'. It is a mile or so from 'Wildern' formerly in Botley and now in Hedge End, whose name is certainly from Middle English 'wilderne'='wilderness'. West End stands on a patch of Plateau Gravel. Both places stand on or adjacent to the damp and potentially thickly wooded soils of the Wickham 3 and 4 associations, and the waste referred to may have been virgin woodland.
